. Joshua PILOT was born in France about 1665 and died about 1723 in Portarlington, Co. Laois, Ireland. He owned lands at Poitiers but because of his support for the Huguenot cause he was forced to flee from France. He worked as an usher (teacher) in Londonderry Free School from 1688-91 and took part in the defence of the city during the siege of 1698 as a captain in Col. Mitchelburn`s regiment. His name appears on a list of Freemen of the Borough of Carrickfergus drawn up in 1706. He received a pension of 2 shillings (British half-pay) as a lieutenant on discharge from Lord Mountjoy`s regiment. Under the scheme promoted by Viscount Galway for the settlement of officers after the Williamite wars he was given a grant of land at Kildonbrannon near Portarlington, and subsequently owned a property (Tierhogar House) in the same locality. |
